Business Q&A: Coaching 'real estate agents to run their business as a business'

Aug 30, 2010 (Belleville News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Bob Corcoran established Corcoran Consulting & Coaching in Swansea 20 years ago as a service to help real estate professionals run their business more efficiently through the implementation of sound systems and one-on-one coaching.


He has recently developed a model that uses online-based video training to reach real estate agents and brokers. He recently talked to business reporter Will Buss about his service: QUESTION: What exactly do you provide at Corcoran Consulting & Coaching? ANSWER: "We work in the real estate industry teaching real estate agents to run their business as a business. I have been coaching for 29 years. I've listened to what real estate agents have said what was going on in the market, and it wasn't pretty. I needed a more affordable product than just coaching service and one-on-one work that we currently have in place. It can get pricey, so I came up with a product that would be affordable and still have results. The Realtors who are out there are younger and more self-paced. We came up with self-paced video coaching with the same principles that we apply in our one-on-one consultation. It's now in a video format." Q: How is it designed? A: "It is designed to teach and to show companies how to sell and buy property. We are a national service. The Realtors then teach sellers, renters and buyers how to get out from underneath from a property that they may be upside down on or sell a house to maybe get a bigger house. We teach agents to serve clientele." Q: What have been the results? A: "Last year, of the Wall Street Journal's Top 100 List of the year's top 100 teams, we have 13 clients of those top 100 teams. It was pretty astounding, and 16 clients achieved 25 awards." Q: How many do you employ? A: "We run a virtual company of 17 people. Seven work out of Swansea and the rest work throughout North American in Canada and the United States. It's a virtual company." Q: How does that work? A: "In a virtual world, you are not physically working side by side with somebody. They go their own way and do their own thing, self-managed and self-disciplined. As a culture, we're a servant organization. We're here to serve real estate agents who serve buyers and sellers in the market. We make sure we hire people that have our company's core values, self image and self discipline. Everybody manages themselves, and we hold each other accountable. My job is to be the visionary." Q: What is your background? A: "My background is in business management. I was an executive recruiter and was doing recruiting jobs for a telecommunications company. I then conceptualized and developed the interactive voice response system for real estate in 1989. It was a great lead generation system with 24/7 information about properties and it still is today." Q: What do you enjoy most about your work? A: "The people. We're so blessed that we get to work with the top minds and top Realtors in America." Q: What is your approach to your business? A: "Stay focused and passionate about what you do. That is the success of anything. If you're not passionate about it, get out and find what you're passionate about.
