BRIEF: Security company reports scam by phone

Jan 30, 2013 (Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Area residents who get a call from someone claiming to be with a company that has taken over Smithville Telecom's security business should not give out any information, hang up and report the call to police.

A news release from the Ellettsville-based business says a customer received a telephone call Tuesday from a man who said his company had taken over Smithville's home security business. The man told the woman he would need to gain access to her home to reprogram the security system.

"Our first priority is to make it clear to our customers to restrict anyone from entering their home to reprogram their security system," Smithville president and CEO Darby A. McCarty said in a news release.

She said Smithville Security continues to be a part of her company, and that she is taking steps to get to the bottom of the phone scam. Customers with questions should call Smithville's customer contact center at 876-2211.
