Database Solution for SaaS and PaaS Offered by Continuent
The general availability of Continuent Tungsten version 1.3 has been announced by Continuent Inc. Significant improvements for customers running MySQL and PostgreSQL-based applications and solutions are offered by this solution. Continuent Tungsten solution is also well suited for SaaS and PaaS vendors running on MySQL.
Continuent has won more than 20 new SaaS customers in the past year. These include Thomson Reuters, Five9 (News - Alert), Topspin and Church Community Builder. Continuent also has many new deployments and proof-of-concepts in the pipeline.
In a release, Eero Teerikorpi, CEO, Continuent said, “Today software is increasingly delivered via software as a service (SaaS (News - Alert)) model. In many cases these solutions have been developed using low cost open source tools, which originally have not been designed for the specific needs of SaaS or PaaS vendors nor address the need for customer level SLAs.”
SaaS and PaaS vendors will be able to raise bottom-line with Continuent Tungsten. Vendors can now meet the Service Level Agreements easily. Customers will not lose data as the vendors can provide continuous application availability. By using existing hardware more effectively, the solution will help in covering the increased performance and data volume. This will help in adding new customers easily.
In a release, Jim Dvorkin, CTO, Five9 said, “To run a multi-tenant and multi-site SaaS solution creates a whole new set of issues that we need to address. These include need for high performance, scalability, and last but not least, requirement for truly continuous operations without downtime -- even during our maintenance and upgrade cycles. I feel that Continuent Tungsten solution is well positioned to address many of these issues.”
Maintaining live copies with data consistency checking is one of the high availability and data protection features of Tungsten. The solution also provides tightly coupled backup/restore integration with advanced database cluster management tools. Without downtime, system upgrades are possible with Tungsten cluster management.
Open source database users are able to replicate faster with Tungsten as compared to the native solutions for MySQL. Zero-down time database upgrades are possible with Tungsten. Load created by users is automatically balanced as Tungsten applications connect seamlessly, even within cloud environment, to the database backend.
