The 108,000 square-foot call center facility, opened in 2004 and formerly owned by a banking and financial services company called Wachovia Corp., will cost Wells Fargo 5.1 million to run annually.
Starting in July, the increased workforce, up from 600 to 800, will help improve the company’s customer service tasks in its credit card, home equity and banking businesses.
According to Don Pearson, Wells Fargo’s Regional President, the high-performance of its skilled workforce in the region is responsible for the company’s new hiring plans in Salem. Customer service, productivity and sale production had gone up and for continued growth, hiring of more skilled personnel was necessary.
New employees will have a starting pay range of $11.86 to $12.89 per hour, plus a benefits package, paid time off, a 401(k), as well as medical, vision and dental plans. There is also quarterly incentive pay eligibility for employees.
The region has lately seen a number of companies move in and start hiring. A unit of Garmin (News - Alert) Ltd, earlier this year, set up a call center in Salem and hired about 40 employees. Mastercraft Furniture, Inc. has also relocated factory operations from its Wilsonville factory to a Stayton factory for furniture manufacturing, and has hired about 250 employees within 2 years.
In January 2011, a Home Depot distribution center moved into the Salem area and opened a 467,000 square-foot warehouse and hired 230 employees at the Mill Creek Corporate Center.
Customer service representatives in the region have also enjoyed a much higher average wage of $15.26. This is $4.15 per hour more than a telemarketer in the area. At Statewide, a call center worker earns an average of $15.92 per hour. The new Wells Fargo customer contact center is located near State Street and Hawthorne Avenue.
Wells Fargo recently partnered with United Way to provide special counseling services to low and moderate income households.
