Greenplum and Sun Microsystems to Tap Reliance's Call Detail Data
By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor
Indian telecommunications giant Reliance announced today that it’s using “High-Performance Database” and “Data Warehouse Solutions” from Greenplum, Sun and Solaris OS for Faster Access to their Call Detail Data.
Running on the “Sun Data Warehouse Appliance,” Greenplum’s database powers a range of applications, according to the company, from legal and regulatory compliance to call detail record analysis.
Company officials say the Greenplum Database is the world’s fastest, most cost-effective solution for analyzing information, by surging worldwide usage of wireless and broadband services. It helps companies analyze critical information about their data, Greenplum officials say.
Greenplum provides database software for business intelligence. With its headquarters in San Mateo, California, the company says it has the world’s fastest, most scalable database software for business intelligence to its credit.
Bill Cook, chief executive officer of Greenplum, said, “As demand for wireless and internet connectivity soars in Asia, emerging companies as well as larger established players are looking for high-performance, cost-effective database solutions to manage the explosion of call detail data.”
Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Sun Microsystems (News - Alert) Inc. is a known entity in more 100 countries, company officials say, and the business powers the global marketplace with its new technologies. Company officials say they push network participation through shared innovation, community development and open source leadership.
Reliance Communications, Comcast, Skype (News - Alert), AirTran and O’Reilly Media are some of the Sun Microsystems’ clients.
Reliance Communications (News - Alert) Limited is known, according to the company, for its innovative market offerings and practices, and is one of India’s largest industrial groups. With more than 40 million subscribers, it provides “accurate and timely” data support, according to the company, and analytics, to all parts of a business.
Raj Joshi, vice president and head of decision support systems at Reliance, said, “Deploying the joint Greenplum and Sun solution improved our response times and data management. It is helping Reliance meet its goal of superior responsiveness in a challenging data environment, one that is characterized by rapid growth and increasing user demand.”
Once the Sun-Greenplum solution has been set up, company officials say, the turnaround time for an ad hoc request for detailed call records from the historical call detail record database can reduced by more than 80 percent. According to the company, that’s as low as 20 minutes in some cases. The same is being extended to billing data for telecom carriers on the broader network by including call detail records from its interconnect traffic, according to the company.
Kapil Sood, director of Sun Microsystems’ industry sales organization, said, “In addition to the high performance compute power of the Data Warehouse Appliance, Reliance will also benefit from the Solaris 10 Operating System and Solaris ZFS file system with its dramatic advances in file management and data integrity.”
