Nortel Intros Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning Resource Center

October 23, 2009
Nortel (News - Alert) has introduced the Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning Resource Center in order to help companies maintain constant customer availability and minimize business disruption even under the most extreme conditions.

The company said that its portfolio of solutions and services delivers the foundation that companies require to be prepared for the worst. And, the new on-line solutions resource center consolidates a detailed, holistic view of best practices and solutions.

Sheila McGee-Smith, president and principal analyst at McGee-Smith Analytics, noted that Nortel is taking a proactive approach to educating businesses about the challenges as well as solutions available to them.

Calling this latest announcement a timely initiative, she said that it’ll help Nortel customers understand the benefits and necessary steps to take in creating a comprehensive continuity plan using communications solutions that often are already in place, such as contact center, voice portal and outbound dialing applications.

Nortel said that according to the World Bank, costs to businesses from a global flu pandemic are anticipated to run as high as $3 trillion and render nearly 40 percent of the employee population ill.

And, natural disasters – floods, earthquakes and tsunamis – often displace thousands of workers, disrupting productivity. Nortel officials said that natural disasters have the potential to create huge liabilities and bankrupt unprepared businesses.

Company officials said that against this backdrop, it is the ability to keep operations up-and-running, regardless of the situation, which will drive customer confidence and provide competitive differentiation, particularly for entities that provide essential and real-time services.

Designed to provide a centralized repository for Business Continuity solutions and services, the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Resource Center also offers other useful links and resources.

We Durow, vice president of global marketing for Enterprise Solutions at Nortel, said that business continuity has to be proactive, and be part of the business operations plan before disaster strikes.

“Enterprises risk alienating customers and losing significant financial resources if their business are unavailable even for short periods. However, enterprises that are prepared and continue to serve customers stand to enhance customer loyalty and grow market share,” he said.
