New Sepaton Solution Protects Data In the Cloud

June 29, 2010
One of the big concerns organizations and IT professionals have had with cloud computing is how to protect the data in that off-premises network-accessible environment, especially inside multitenant architectures.

Sepaton may have the solution. It has come up with what it says is the industry's first cost-effective, secure multi-tenancy and cloud-optimized data protection appliance with the release of version 5.4 of its software. Secure multi-tenancy based on Sepaton's Storage Pool technology and DeltaStor deduplication it says enables cloud providers and enterprises with private cloud infrastructures to cost effectively protect data for multiple customers or business units on a single Sepaton S2100-ES2 data protection appliance.

At the same time, Sepaton's DeltaView Manager and ContentAware Analytics provide management and detailed reporting to enable a single administrator to quickly and easily manage multiple storage pools in a single Sepaton system. Meanwhile Sepaton's Analytics provide the information administrators and managers need to optimize performance, maximize system utilization and accurately project cost and resource requirements.

Here are the 5.4 highlights:

Automated performance, load-balancing and thin provisioning.

Sepaton's DeltaScale architecture enables each pool to take advantage of its thin provisioning technology and provides dynamic performance. All nodes in the system will work together to deduplicate incoming data regardless of the pool. Thus, if only one pool is being accessed, all system nodes will deduplicate the incoming data. If data is then ingested for a different pool, the nodes will automatically load-balance to deliver optimal deduplication performance for both pools. Storage pooling meets the immediate need for virtual storage that allows flexible allocation of resources to meet changing business needs and improve infrastructure efficiency.

Storage Tiering

Sepaton's multi-tenancy design enables customers to implement different storage technologies to meet differing requirements. Additionally, as new technologies emerge like denser disk packaging or increased drive sizes, customers could use the pool technology to implement these solutions transparently without impacting ongoing operations and retire older technology over different timeframes.

There are other enhancements to version 5.4, among them:
  • Hitachi (News - Alert) Data Systems AMS2100 disk array support. The new disk system provides 99.999 percent data availability with no single point of failure, dual battery backup, RAID-6 support and multiple hot spares. Additionally, the array includes 1TB and 2TB disk options for flexibility
  • Expanded backup application support. These include for the NBU 7.0 (with support for OST as Windows/Linux certifications are complete), TSM 6.2 and NetWorker 7.5.2 and 7.6
  • WAN efficiency Improvements for DeltaRemote. An enhanced checkpointing feature enables replication to automatically restart in the case of transmission failures resulting in faster and more efficient replication. Additionally, the new release includes pause and resume functionality thus allowing the administrator to optimize network traffic
  • Secure Erasure. Secure Erasure is a licensed option for Sepaton systems introduced in VTL 5.4 which provides for guaranteed erasure of information on virtual tape cartridges
  • DeltaView Manager. The DeltaView Manager is a central management suite, providing customers with the most sophisticated 24/7 pro-active platform monitoring, and advanced diagnostics and reporting capabilities integrated into a separate management node
"Private and public clouds are emerging because they offer a compelling value proposition that helps firms cost-effectively store, manage and protect the exponential growth of information assets," said Laura DuBois, program vice president, IDC (News - Alert). "Sepaton is well positioned to protect data in a cloud with the new capabilities of storage pools and data analytics based on its ContentAware architecture."

"Enterprises are looking for ways to drive cost out of data protection through automation and economies of scale," said Jay Kramer, vice president of worldwide marketing, Sepaton. "Sepaton changes the way we think about the cloud by providing the industry's only highly efficient way to manage petabytes of data from multiple entities on a single system while optimizing CAPEX and OPEX (News - Alert)."

"Sepaton's multi-tenancy and ContentAware Analytics capability is an important milestone in our progress towards complete data protection lifecycle Management for the cloud," added Fidelma Russo, chief operating officer, Sepaton. "By allowing for dynamic performance optimization and data segmentation via storage pools, [our] tenancy technology provides the basis for future innovation. Over time, we anticipate implementing additional functionality such as WORM or encryption which will be applied on a pool basis. Our integrated multi-tenancy model is highly differentiated compared to the small single system design of our competitors and we are the only vendor who provides this functionality today."
