66 Jobs to Go as AT&T Closes Greensboro, North Carolina Call Center

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice filed on Tuesday with the North Carolina Commerce Department, AT&T (News - Alert) is removing 66 full-time posts from a credit and collections call center in Greensboro by the end of March. The telecommunication service provider explained that it is removing the jobs as part of a “business reduction decision affecting its finance organization”, according to reports.

59 of the 66 affected workers are collections representatives and the remaining seven are  office assistants, but a spokesperson for AT&T, Josh Gelinas, assures the press that there will be no related or knock-on job-eliminations as a result of these redundancies, whether in Winston-Salem or in the Piedmont Triad area generally.

Although the company announced the closing of the Greensboro center in December, it provided no details at the time other than that the affected jobs would be moved to a larger facility in Birmingham, Alabama.

Another spokesperson for AT&T, Marty Richter, said in December that they “…continue to hire in North Carolina, and across the region, in the growing parts of our business”, supplementing the 6,800-strong workforce the company already employs in North Carolina. As support to his claims, Richter went on to point to the examples of AT&T hiring over 400 U-verse technicians and retail employees during 2012 and its plan to hire more than 130 more during 2013.

The WARN Act requires companies to notify both state government, local government, and any affected workers of any actual or potential job cuts at least 60 days in advance of their implementation or formal announcement. The Act affects any business with 100 full-time employees or more and was introduced to not only give employees notice if redundancies were planned, but also as a means by which certain wage and benefit requirements could be imposed on employers.

The report further noted that AT&T announced that the job cuts would be dealt with in accordance with the terms of its collective bargaining agreement with the Communications Workers of America.
