AdapativeMobile, a provider of solutions for mobile security, stated that as the July 1st compliance deadline for Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) nears, there has been an increase in the volume SMS spam across Canada.
The company also detailed the advanced methods which spammers are using to affect users and based on one’s location in Canada it is now possible to tell the type of SMS they would receive.
The CASL was passed to ensure Canadians are able to avoid spams and other electronic threats and learn to recognize spam. From July 1 onwards, the law will be in force and it will help to protect Canadians while ensuring that businesses can continue to compete in the global marketplace.
Cathal McDaid, head of data intelligence & analytics at AdaptiveMobile (News - Alert), remarked, “Our analysis from December 2013 to June 2014, shows an increase in messaging abuse, which comes amidst the publicity around Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation. SMS spammers are sophisticated, adapting content to different regions for targeted campaigns. We anticipate the introduction of CASL will provide consumers much greater clarity on the difference between legitimate mobile advertising and messaging abuse, empowering people to report unwanted messages with confidence.”
The study conducted by AdaptiveMobile revealed that Quebec is the most spammed province closely followed by Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia and the city of Montreal alone received 34 percent of the total span – a number that is significantly higher than the rest of the country. For 2014, the amount of spam being sent is increasing, especially for Quebec residents. Along with Montreal, Vancouver is also stated to be receiving more spam in terms of spam per city population, compared to the other cities, where Toronto remains the fifth most targeted city in the country.
AdaptiveMobile asserted that the groups behind the messaging abuse are often criminal organizations that have little regard for compliance standards or laws and the new CASL should help in bringing down spamming techniques like growth hacking and more.
