With Fujitsu Codec, TV2GO Broadcasts World Junior Hockey Championships
By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributor
Fujitsu Computer Products of America, a provider of computer products and broadcast solutions, reportedly said that it IP-9500e MPEG-4 AVC codec was used by TV2GO, a Canada-based provider of HD satellite transmission, to broadcast the World Junior Hockey Championships held in Ottawa.
With the Fujitsu (News - Alert) IP-9500e, TV2GO cost-effectively transmitted and uplinked high-definition signals of the match to Sweden and other countries in Europe, by providing multiple broadcast stations with a low-latency MPEG-4 feed.
According to Fujitsu, the IP-9500e MPEG-4 encoder provides high picture quality at low bit rates and low-latency. This facilitates in HD satellite news gathering as well as transmission of live events – by making use of existing modulators and decoders. This make the decoder a cost-effective choice, said the company.
The codec leverages advanced MPEG-4 AVC encoding to perform real-time transmission of HDTV at low bit rates over DVB and broadband IP networks. It make use of latest H.264 Level 4 image processing and compression algorithms, thereby offering best-of-class video quality for use in Electronic News Gathering as well as broadcast contribution and distribution networks, says Fujitsu.
TV2GO said that it integrated the IP-9500e encoders on existing platforms teleport and satellite uplink trucks. The deployment included company’s pilot platform that was used while delivering NFL games in Europe in the past season. By working jointly with Fujitsu, TV2GO managed to achieve the transmission of high definition signals in only 9MHz bandwidth, which was not possible to achieve just few years ago.
Additionally, TV2GO is now working on developing a platform leveraging the same technology that will be used for a world distribution of TNA Wrestling in HD.
Vic Herring, senior director, video solutions group, Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., said, “The ability to deliver high-quality HD footage from across the globe is vital for broadcasters as the portfolio of HD programming available continues to increase.”
Herring added: “The IP-9500e has set the industry standard when it comes to picture quality and low-latency, allowing TV2GO and other customers to deliver a superior product while also reducing the overall costs of broadcasting in HD by enabling video feeds to be transmitted via existing infrastructure.”
Adrian Hepes, technical director of TV2GO, said, “The increasing need for bandwidth and high quality video signal in modern television, specifically in contribution, requires encoding equipment of high quality and low latency. The Fujitsu IP-9500e is the proven industry leader when it comes to HD picture quality and low latency for satellite H264 transmissions, making it the ideal choice for our broadcast of the Junior Hockey World Championships.”
