InterDigital (News - Alert), Inc. (IDCC), a wireless research and development company, recently announced that it has joined hands with StarHub, Singapore's fully-integrated info-communications company that offers a full range of information, communications and entertainment services for both consumer and corporate markets, to evaluate and try Wi-Fi(R) over dynamically managed unlicensed spectrum.
According to a release, the companies will use InterDigital’s Dynamic Spectrum (News - Alert) Management (DSM) technology to evaluate the suitability of Wi-Fi(R) and UHF (TV White Space) spectrum for both indoor and outdoor applications such as video surveillance and small cell backhaul. The DSM enables Wi-Fi, LTE (News - Alert) and other wireless communications over TV White Space (TVWS) and other under-utilized frequency bands.
The technologies can be integrated into wireless terminal devices or infrastructure platforms to provide additional wireless broadband capacity when traditional networks are saturated. These spectrum harvesting technologies can service more users, increase data throughput, avoid interference, and build out the small cell, heterogeneous network that is now being recognized as the future of wireless infrastructure.
"Singapore is a very important and innovative world market. We are excited to be part of this significant evaluation and trial of our DSM (News - Alert) technology," said Jim Nolan, Executive Vice President of InterDigital's Innovation Labs, in a press release. "We are also pleased to announce that we have joined the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance, and are working with StarHub and other companies to promote regulatory policies that will pave the way for innovative new wireless technologies that address growing wireless data and digital divide challenges."
In related news, InterDigital recently announced that its Board of Directors has declared a regular quarterly cash dividend of $0.10 per share on its common stock, payable on October 23, 2013 to shareholders of record at the close of business on October 9, 2013. Founded in 1972, InterDigital is listed on NASDAQ and is included in the S&P MidCap 400 index.
